Sherry

Well before the Roman conquest some 2,200 years ago, the area around Cadiz, Spain already boasted a flourishing grape-growing and winemaking tradition. Canaanites, who founded the city around 900 b.c., brought vines and the winemaking trade with them. Greeks added to this knowledge and during Rome’s rule from about 200 b.c. to 100 a.d., Cadiz’s wine industry transformed from a local industry to a phenomenon throughout the known world. Vintages from the area around southern Spain soon were being shipped throughout the Empire. The drink that would become the sherry we know today was a favorite among the Roman elite.

Williams & Humberts

-

The winery was founded in 1877 by Sir Alexander Williams, a great admirer, and connoisseur of sherry products, and Arthur Humbert, a specialist in international relations. Since the start, they have preserved part of the original wines and brandies in high-quality oak casks. These soleras are the base of the development and aging of every sherry and brandy produced at Bodegas Williams & Humbert. The history of Bodegas Williams & Humbert began almost 140 years ago. They participated in the creation of the Appellation of Origin Jerez-Xérès-Brandy, and to this day, the winery still is recognized as one of the most prestigious producers in the world. Throughout 140 years, the company has managed to grow to 1,200 acres of vineyards in Jerez, also boasting the largest bodega in Europe, with capacity for 60,000 casks of Sherry and Brandy. The facility produces a wide array of Rums, Vodkas, Gins, Sherries, Brandies, Liqueurs and Wines

Royal Ahold

--

Since the beginning of the business, characterized by their aggressiveness and functional activity, different brands are acquired that enhance and multiply the capacities of the family and its partners. Relations between the Medina family and the Dutch multinational Ahold date back to 1979, the year in which Ahold takes a 50% stake in Luis Páez S.A. (now Bodegas Williams & Humbert S.A.), a winery owned by the Medina brothers. This Association and subsequent collaboration agreements allow the family to increase their presence in Jerez, arriving in a few years to be among the first commercializing companies of Jerez worldwide. The Medina family reached in 2005 an agreement with Royal Ahold to acquire the other 50% of the shares subscribed. Due to this deal, the Medina family consolidates the management of the company and its subsidiaries.
