Maderia 1870 Jardim do Mar Sercial
Sercial, Recorked and rewaxed by Francisco Albuquerque
Provenance: Christies London, 3/13/2017
Tasting note: Intense high toned nose with crème brulée and foral aromas. Nicely opening up after some time in the glass. Straw. At frst smell the wine appeared a bit tired. Etheral, focused start of taste, fne, butter scotch but remaining dry aromas in the mouth. Nice canteiro aged acidity on the fnish. Very nice Sercial. Classic a bit rough with long lingering taste. Strikingly butterscotch on the favor. After half an hour more inviting nose of frestone, salty even, high toned still. Smokey tones. Fresh acidity. Getter better with time in the glass. June 2016. EV.
The island of Madeira has been producing and exporting its namesake wine virtually since the Portuguese discovered it in 1419. Since then, Madeira’s location in the middle of important trade routes meant the success of its wines mirrored the worldwide geopolitical situation. The fortified wine’s fortunes have soared during times of peace, prosperity, and free trade and plummeted during conflict and international upheaval.
