Madeira 1840 Perestrello
Terrantez, Stencilled Front, Rebottled in 2016
Provenance: Christies Geneve, 11/12/2017
Tasting note: Clear golden yellow color. Fresh straw, lemons, spring flowers, touch of varnish and butter on the fine high toned nose. Quite on concentrated and on the butterscotch side. Very good nose. Old furniture wax. Fresh herbs. Soft well balanced start of taste, lemon zest, freshly sweet, on the finish fine buttery. Quite elegant, like bittersweets. Fine-tuned Terrantez of very good quality, especially the balance and finesse is remarkable. Vintage furniture wax with fine grapefruit bitters. Very good wine. February 2016 EV.
The island of Madeira has been producing and exporting its namesake wine virtually since the Portuguese discovered it in 1419. Since then, Madeira’s location in the middle of important trade routes meant the success of its wines mirrored the worldwide geopolitical situation. The fortified wine’s fortunes have soared during times of peace, prosperity, and free trade and plummeted during conflict and international upheaval.
