Madeira 1830 Sercial Cunha
Verdelho Antigo "Pico e Saloes" Estreito de Camara de Lobos, Recorked in 2015 by Francisco Albuquerque
Provenance: Christies London, 3/12/2017
Tasting note: This wine has punch, on the nose foral tones quite attractive in fact. Finesse. Freshly crushed white peaches. A day I tasted another bottle which we opened just minutes earlier. It showed more butterscotch, vintage wax, dried peaches, in a more closed way compared to the previous bottle. Clearly a long cask aged wine of high quality. Fine creamy pure citrus taste, medium dry, lovely acidity. Well balanced. Very nice soft slight sweet. Last tasted February 2016. EV.
The island of Madeira has been producing and exporting its namesake wine virtually since the Portuguese discovered it in 1419. Since then, Madeira’s location in the middle of important trade routes meant the success of its wines mirrored the worldwide geopolitical situation. The fortified wine’s fortunes have soared during times of peace, prosperity, and free trade and plummeted during conflict and international upheaval.
