Girard was founded in 1884 by Étienne Girard in Tonnay-Charente. He bought the Tonnay-Charente distillery from Gustave Delagarde who had built it in 1881. Girard was a very successful business thanks to exports. Étienne Girard died in 1939. His assistant, Pierre Gaiffe, managed to get Girard through the war years without loss. In 1953 the company was passed on to Étienne Girard's grandson, Loïk Giffo. From about 1931, Girard stops distilling and focuses on the cognac trade, including maturing. In 1975 Girard was sold and transferred to Gemaco (which at that time was already part of the Berger group). 1995 Merger of Marie Brizard with Berger. Owner will be Marie Brizard & Roger. 2006 Marie Brizard & Roger becomes a subsidiary of the Groupe Belvedere.
