Wiese & Krohn

Old Liquors, Wiese & Krohn founders

Wiese & Krohn was founded in 1865 by two young Norwegians cousins, Theodor Wiese and Dankert Krohn. In 1880 Theodor Wiese decided to sell his share to Dankert Krohn – the Company was simply too small to be shared by two owners – but he went on working for W&K as a commercial agent in Norway. Due to his excellent work, sales were largely increased and the company entered a new period of economic progress.

In 1910 Edmundo Falcão Carneiro joined the company and gradually purchased the interests of the other partners, and in 1937 he was the sole owner. The third generation of Falcão Corsairs is now operating the firm. Its activity takes place both in Vila Nova de Gaia, where the Ports are matured and bottled in old Cellars and in the Douro Wine District where the company has Quinta do Retiro Novo in the Rio Torto Valley, which they bought in 1989.

Quinta do Retiro Novo

Old Liquors, Wiese & Krohn Quinta do Retiro Novo

The location of Wiese & Krohn’s estate Quinta do Retiro Novo is in Sarzedinho, a tiny village in the Rio Torto valley. In this area, the nature of the soil where the vines are growing, the altitude, the locality, the (low) productivity and the slope of the vineyards are particularly favorable to the production of quality Ports. It was acquired of Manuel Magalhaes and remained in his family until his grand-daughter Maria Leonor Magalhaes Bacelar sold it to Wiese & Krohn in 1989.
